There are two main forms of esophageal cancer (histological types): squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma arises from the covering cells (epithelial cells) of the esophageal mucosa. It occurs mainly in the middle and lower third of the esophagus. Only ten to 15 percent of these tumors are located in the upper third esophagus. The adenocarcinoma mainly affects the lower region of the esophagus, so it is close to the gastric inlet. This type of tumor results from the glandular tissue located there.
